This new guide is a must for birders visiting the region. It includes 4 countries (more info for your money), very comprehensive: includes habitat descriptions, quick index, range maps and beautiful plates among other things. What I love about this new book as compared to older guides is that it is very complete and practical to use!!,when identifying a bird the page includes a range map, detailed description of the bird, and it is next to the drawing, no more going back and forth to see the plate and read the description and range!The authors did a great job on this well thought and laid out guide!
Finally, an up-to-date field guide to the birds of Northern Central America that’s easily portable and user friendly - I just wish I’d learned of this before I went on a birding trip to Guatemala! This is a very useful guide, with good illustrations, descriptions, and range maps. (Don’t be surprised if you buy a new copy and it looks like there’s a coffee stain on the upper right-hand corner; this is just how it was designed, for reasons known only to the graphic designer.)
This book is listed on the Amazon website as a guide book that covers birds found in Mexico. This guide does NOT cover Mexico--it covers Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
This compact guide is very well done and includes many recent records, expanding the avian knowledge of this under-birded region. Everything you might possibly see in the region is illustrated (unlike some of the region's older field guides). For example, I much prefer it to the older (and heavier!) Howell guide. Plates are mostly well drawn and my only quibble is a fairly small font size.
A great, pocket-sized field guide! Up-to-date and comprehensive for the region. Carefully compares look-alike species. Identifies endemics. As an amateur, I was impressed by how well the professionals I birded with in Belize and Cozumel received this new book.
Used this on a trip to Belize and was very impressed with it. The pictures and descriptions were accurate and very useful for identifying birds we saw. I was able to identify several birds I'd never seen or heard of before by just paging through the book, which is impossible if the illustrations aren't just right. The compact size is convenient to carry in the field without sacrificing usability.
It's a great field guide to the central countries of Central America. I like that it's complete and includes birds that are also seen in North America. The paintings are accurate, clear, and attractive. The text is well organized, focusing on the significant field marks for identification. It's small enough to be conveniently carried in the field. This new book fills a big need.
Wet well laid out. Descriptions are clear, drawings are a good size and show some habitat.
