This captivating book is an introduction to endangered species and meant for those of us who want our kids to grow up in a world still full of wonderful, wild creatures. The pictures are big and bold and sympathetic; on one page we see two enormous blue whales eying each other and there is genuine warmth in their gazes. And who knew blue whales can communicate up to a thousand miles away? This kid-friendly book is packed with all sorts of fascinating details. Lions’ manes get darker as they get older but all lions have to be on the watch for hunters. Unlike the domestic cats we know, a very big cat, the tiger, loves to swim. This is good stuff, as they say.A global map at the beginning shows where each species lives and a key explains the range of categories from “Not vulnerable” up to “Extinct”. At the end, author Clinton explains the categories and provides suggestions for families who want to save animals. Can we actually do something? Yes, we can, in simple, normal activities. In the book, each two pages is devoted to a species, and we learn why each is in trouble. Talented artist Marino has provided marvelous, large pictures so a child of any age can browse the book by themself and I predict they will want to. While a single paragraph provides diverse facts about each species, they are loaded paragraphs. For this reason, it may be a book that one can read repeatedly and learn something new each time, or you may want to limit readings for the young ones to just a few animals each time. Overall, I’d be more inclined to recommend the book for 2nd and 3rd grades (for the written content), and even slightly older grades would find this a good resource they can easily understand and use for assignments. I’d like to see more books like this.

I have mixed feelings about this book.On the one hand, the illustrations are lovely. The text is densely packed with animal facts, almost too much so. It's very educational and informative, right down to teaching readers how animals are classified as "endangered" and whatnot.On the other hand, the book is targeted at ages 4-8. For the youngest readers, the densely-packed text about each animal is simply too densely packed. Certainly they will not be able to read it themselves. For all young readers, the book is a bit alarmist. I am an environmentally-conscious vegetarian. It's not as if this issue does not concern me. But I also know how much children can take to heart the potential loss of a beloved species. They lack the perspective and emotional maturity adults bring to the same issue. In other words, this book has the potential to REALLY upset young readers. I know my kids get really worked up over endangered animals. There are gentler ways to introduce children to the idea of being environmentally-conscientious citizens. It may just be more than the target age group can handle.I am going to give this book 5 stars because it's a good book. But I think it's important that you be forewarned.
