I'm a fan of Travelers' Tales and so I was intrigued by their Peace Corps series. I haven't had the money to purchase all 4 books in this series yet, so I purchased this book to share with a friend because it covered the one part of the world that neither of us had been to yet.One of the things I love about Travelers' Tales books is the way they choose a narrow focus and then find excellent writing about that area or subject. This book was no exception. The varying stories by different Peace Corps authors took me to different parts of Latin America and gave me insights into some of the different countries and their cultures, as well as some ideas on what Peace Corps volunteers really DO when they are overseas. I enjoyed the mix of stories, from short to long and both light and serious. I also found this book helpful in giving me other authors to pursue -- some of the authors in this section had written full-length books as well that I don't think I would have found otherwise. And while my friend has not finished the book yet, she has also been impressed with what she's read so far.
This is a wonderfully written series of Peace Corps stories from Latin America. It has been almost fifty yearssince I served in Colombia as a Volunteer. Yet, with the first story I read, I was back. The stories span the five decades.Some are heart warming like "Ecuadorian Beisbal," and some heartbreaking, "The Birth." All are true.Joanne Roll
