Incredibly well written and easy to pick up. I love that it increases complexity in such a gradual manner.* Update * - I had given this book 5 stars. I'm using the Kindle version and once I get to around 34% into the book, the formatting goes berserk. I noticed the issue on other pages too. Instead of a sentence, i get one character per line. I'd love to give this 5 stars again, but the book is unusable in digital format.* Another update * - The issues I'm having are with Kindle's cloud reader online. It looks perfectly decent on my actual kindle.
This book is for developers who know at least some PHP. After my company abruptly decided to switch to Wordpress for their news site this book gave me a quick ramp up to be able to show I know something about plugins quickly. It's a good intro for developers to WordPress Plugins by showing some real-world examples.
This excellent development book is more than a "cookbook". It starts with hands-on development of simple plugins and slowly moves to more advanced projects. If you're a PHP developer who's been wanting to learn WordPress plugin development, you won't be disappointed with this book.You can follow along with either a web-based site or on a local server, which the book gives a brief example of how to setup for the three main OS's. - I have no connection with the publisher or author and have not received anything in return for this review....{sadly!} :)
A must have book for any serious WordPress CMS user looking to get into any level of WP development or get a real handle on WordPress technically, skills. I'm not writing this for the techically elite, you will find all you need too. It's tough to know where to start as a non-programmer. WordPress is daunting. This book is the answer. Plugins are the way to go to level up. This book is essential for me as a WP user just to understand and use WP beyond the web interface without having to learn full blown coding first.This book is perfect for me. And you. It's well written and meticulously illustrated when it really counts. Clear and thorough explanations of each aspect of WordPress. You learn and do at an advanced but not overwhelming level. Very satisfying .I've been actively looking for, reading, and buying WP books for years. There is nothing else between WP for beginners and coding that I've found that is so useful and usable for mid level, experienced, WP users and are non-coders. I've used WP for several years. I always use Multisites with hundreds of plugins at a time. It can take more than one plug in to do what I need. I've created and destroyed multiple websites. I don't even know how or why things happen. I just get plugins and pray. Getting help on the WordPress.com Forum is tedious when you don't understand what is being asked by helpful users. Then there's trying to implement users' suggestions. There's a huge skill and knowledge gap there that leads to polite but mutual frustration. I pay monthly for WP tech support help.The 5 Minute WordPress Install is a farce. Like the rest of WP. com it assumes that you know a lot. Like how to configure a database. I've installed the WP CMS on every desktop and laptop I've owned over the years, including manually on Linux using the command prompt. I've never created a usable local development site , I can't find it and don't know how to transfer my site files anyway. Yes, I know how to FTP. I've altered plugin PHP codes before with success and instructions, I can deactivate plugins thru C Panel, I can't install a plugin via FTP. Like WP info, I'm everywhere and nowhere with bits and pieces.That's where this book comes into play. My accumulated experience is piecemeal, I'm not a coder in that I can work with code but I don't know what I'm doing, less so with databases. I want to know but where to start?The book starts at the scratch, I will finally be able to create a local WP development environment and a repository. Then learn and know what, how, and why about each aspect of WP. In comfortable detail. Incredible work!I'm excited! The author is the developer of one of the best WordPress plugins of all time, Link Library. I use it in every site I build. It's powerful, unique and useful. My expectations of his book were high and superceded.
I usually never use books/ebooks when reading about software development. I have to admit that the way the book is structured and how easy the examples are built makes it a "reference book" I really enjoyed. I loved how many examples there is and the fact they are linked to practical use cases. Any developer that starts developing plugins for WordPress should buy it.
This book is super. It is packed with info and from it I quickly wrote a certificate tracker for LearnDash LMS based on the bug tracker. The author explains everything in detail and the code is organized properly so its a snap to activate the next plugin in the series as you ramp up. Highly recommended.
