We have used and trusted Fodor's travel guidebooks for years and have not been disappointed with the authors' recommendations. However, this handy little book let us down twice in one day! In the old town of Casca Vieja in Panama City, we planned to have lunch at a highly recommended cafe called Ego y Narciso. To our great disappointment, it was shuttered and had apparently been out of business for months. That evening, we walked many blocks through the humidity and exhaust fumes (the traffic was in gridlock) in downtown Panama City to another Fodor recommended restaurant, The Market, only to find that it had also gone out of business! Very disappointing. Coincidence? We have lost our trust in Fodor guidebooks and recommendations.
I purchased this book for my second trip to Panama in Mar/Apr 2013 because it was the most recently published travel book I could find, and I like to read about the country details when I am on the plane or otherwise don't have Internet access. When I purchased this book, I was expecting the old-style, thick, Fodor's travel book. This book is more of an overview and thinner, with the reader directed to the web site for additional information. The Panama City section seemed fairly detailed, however we were 2 hours outside of the city and the details were more thin. That being said, as an overview book it is good with the basic information you need. However, if you purchase this book expecting details for the entire country you are probably better off using Fodor's web site.
The entire Azuero penninsula was left out of this guide! Las Tablas in Los Santos is well-known as the folkloric center of Panama, famous for the handmade polleras (national dress) and many cultural festivals. Pedasi, on the end of the peninsula is a growing community that's known for the surfing and deep-sea fishing as well as the nearby Iguana Island. Overall, the guide seems rather elitist in its hotel/dining recommendations, primarily recommending as its picks, the very high-end hotels/resorts/restaurants. It's pretty easy to figure out that those pricey places are going to be good. We discovered many mid- to budget-range places to stay and eat by merely asking locals and expats for recommendations. This guide needs a serious update!
After recently returning from a trip to Panama City I can honestly say that this guide was not very helpful (at least for the city). I can only assume that the writers have not BEEN to Panama recently. Information was inaccurate. For example, the "inexpensive double-decker buses of Citysightseeing Panama" were pathetic. The bus tried to drop me, my child and my 75 year old father in 100 degree weather for an hour in the worst part of the city with no shade. Guides and driver spoke no English and there were no earphones or way to listen to the commentary. This book was published in 2013 so I would assume they would know at the time of writing that almost the entire city of Panama is under construction. They are gearing up for the 100 year celebration of the Canal in 2014. When this is completed I am hopeful that the city will be more travel friendly. This book recommended renting your own car and indicated that the city is easy to get around. I would say only an insane person would attempt to drive themselves. I used a Rick Steves guide in Budapest and had no problems at all. It was spot on. Unfortunately I did not see a Rick Steve's Panama.
I can't stop reading this book! And I hate reading. This guide offers so much more than I had expected, including advising me where to go and where not to go for safety reasons, when to go, average costs to expect, which places only accept cash, what to pack, and even teaching me about the local culture so I don't disrespect them unknowingly. The maps and layout are easy to read and understand.I love this book so much, I bought another one for my mom. I feel so well prepared for my trip now and can't wait to get there. Thanks Fodor!
Good basics, but not the depth that I expected. I usually cap off my research with their input.
Maps did not always show the location of recommended points of interest highlighted in the text portion and the text description of some rural places was insufficient without it.Basically it was a useful guide. I would not have wanted to travel without it although other guides might have been just as helpful.
I liked the book and found it very helpful w/ listings very organized and sequential. Good information on hotels and tour companies. Small fragmented maps showing sections being discussed. I would be nice to have a comprehensive map offered as an option or just include it for a little higher cost.
